Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park : is relatively warm and low-lying plains of Akagera comprise of savannah woodland, wetland and a dozen lakes. It is named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a labyrinth of lakes of which the largest is Lake Ihema, it has exceptional levels of biodiversity and forms the largest protected wetland in central Africa. The largely open expanse is ideal for game viewing, visitors can also encounter buffalo, elephant, antelope, zebra, giraffe, baboons, monkeys, an incredible over 490 bird species, plus much more. A boat trip on Lake Ihema is also a highlight of any visit to Akagera, with its large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles and abundant water birds on the Island in the middle of the lake.

Birding

Akagera National Park is a popular destination for the birders. The park is a home of more than 500 bird species including the migratory birds. Birds in the park include; weaver birds, kingfishers, shoebill stork, swamp fly catcher, red faced barbets, papyrus gonolex, grey crowned crane, African Wattled Plover, Squacco Herons, the Great Snipe, Armot Chat, and Lesser Kesterel among others. Fishing

Spot fishing in Akagera National Park can be done either on Lake Ihema or shakani. Most popular fish caught is Tilapia and catfish and you can roast or cook your fish and enjoy your delicious meal. Tourists can as well participate in fishing tournament that can help you learn different angles.

Game drives

Game drive in Akagera National Park is done in early morning and afternoon. During the wondrous activity tourists can view various animals such as hyenas, leopards, lions, elephants, zebras, rhinos, wild dogs, impalas, baboons, buffalos, giraffes, antelopes, monkeys,  topis, vervets, and the bush babies which are normally spotted during the night. Travelers on a full day game drive can get a chance of viewing both nocturnal and diurnal animals.

Boat cruise

Boat cruise at Akagera National Park is majorly done on Lake Ihema which gives you a chance to enjoy the lake breeze that relaxes your minds and gives you the best memories ever. During the activity you will view the hippos, water birds and other aquatic animals on the fringes of the Lake. You can as well watch other animals trying to drink water on the lake fringes.        

How to get to Akagera national park

The main entry point into Rwanda is Kigali International Airport. It is located in the North Eastern region of Rwanda and about 110 km from Kigali capital city of Rwanda, which is about two and half hour drive. Cars are most favorably used means of transport to the park and 4X4 safari vehicles are recommended since there might be a few bumpy spots along the way.
